2003 - To tip-off the Annual Jalen Rose Foundation Celebrity Weekend,
Jalen hosted an empowerment seminar in the auditorium of Chicago's
prestigious Harold Washington Library for nearly 400 local teenagers on
Friday, August 15. A line-up of notable speakers addressed the students
on a wide variety of topics including education, teen violence, careers
and cultural diversity. Teenagers from Center for New Horizons, Greater Open Door M.B. Church, Illinois Special Olympics, Salvation Army, South Shore High School, Austin High School, Julian High School, McCormick Boys & Girls Club, New City YMCA, West Lawndale CeaseFire and Girls Sports World were in attendance. Guest speakers included Kevin Coval (Def Poetry Jam), Arne Duncan (CEO, Chicago Public Schools), Howard McGee (WGCI-FM), Norman Richardson Kerr (Director, CeaseFire), Nicole Cabell-Pope (WVON-AM & Mahogany Blue, Inc.) and Michael Scott (Board President, Chicago Public Schools). The local R&B group STRONG also entertained the crowd with a special performance featuring some of their new songs that will appear on their next album.
